- We do not know what exactly Descartes had in mind. Newton assumed he meant a circular vortex.
He disproved, correctly, that a circular vortex could not explain the phenomena of gravity because it
violates Kepler's third “law” of planetary motion. I propose a spiral vortex not a circular one.
